What the Independent Laboratory Testing Showed
Independent laboratory testing showed the ThumbPRO® baseball thumb guard reduced transmitted force by almost two-thirds compared with using no thumb guard. The testing was not commissioned by ThumbPRO®.
Now backed by lab data, the hype is officially verified ✅
We love data.
ThumbPRO® was invented by an engineer, Craig First, and engineers tend to ask questions: What is happening? Can we measure it? Does the data support what we think is happening?
In this case, the testing put a measurable result behind something ThumbPRO® hitters have been telling us for years: reducing the transmitted force reaching the hand is what prevents bat sting.
That is exactly the kind of data we like.
You can read more about what was measured and what the result means for ThumbPRO® hitters in our article on baseball thumb guard testing and what the lab results showed.
But a laboratory test, while valuable, answers only one part of an important question.
The lab study gives us the measurement. But, beyond that, more than 100,000 ThumbPRO® guards used in real baseball and softball give us something a controlled test never can: years of experience across thousands of hitters, swings, conditions, and levels of play.
This article is about real hitters, real-world use, and why athletes choose ThumbPRO®.
What Bat Sting Is, and What the Lab Measured
![]()
When a hitter gets jammed or catches a ball away from the sweet spot, mechanical shock and vibration travel through the bat and into the hands. That is the physical event behind what hitters experience as bat sting.
The laboratory measured force, not the sensation of bat sting itself. What it showed objectively was that substantially less transmitted force reached the hand with ThumbPRO® on the hand than when using no baseball thumb guard.
Transmitted force is what a hitter feels as bat sting, so a lower number means less sting on mishits.
If you are still working out whether a thumb guard belongs in your bag, our complete baseball thumb guard guide for hitters covers what one does, how it should fit, and what to look for when choosing one.
The test gave us a number. That number matters, but it does not tell the full story of what real athletes experience when they use the ThumbPRO® baseball thumb guard on the field, in the cage, and over the course of a season.
The next question is how that measured reduction in transmitted force holds up where it matters most: in real swings, real at-bats, and real seasons.
The Bigger Test Has Been Running Since 2020
A controlled study is useful because researchers intentionally remove variables. Real-world play introduces many more variables.
Different hitters. Different hands. Different bats. Different batting gloves. Different swing mechanics. Different temperatures. Different pitch speeds.
Hitters practice in cages and play on fields. They face pitching machines and live pitching. They play in cold spring practices, hot summer tournaments, and everything in between.
They get jammed. They catch balls off the end. They use aluminum, composite, and wood bats.
That is where real-world experience matters. Over five seasons, ThumbPRO® has been used across a wide range of ages, skill levels, playing environments, and competition levels — the kind of breadth no controlled study can reproduce.
ThumbPRO® has been used by hitters across every level of baseball and softball, with more than 100,000 guards sold, including:
- Youth baseball players
- Youth softball players
- Travel teams
- High school athletes
- College baseball and softball players
- Coaches and training facilities
- Teams and organizations
- MiLB players
- MLB players
- Professional players competing at the highest levels of the game
A controlled test cannot reproduce that breadth of people and conditions.
It isn't supposed to.
Laboratory testing tells us what happened under defined conditions. Real-world use tells us what happens when a product becomes part of the game for each athlete.
A Study Can Measure Four Athletes. Real-World Use Tells the Bigger Story.
There is an important distinction when reading any sports-equipment study.
Researchers can collect hundreds of swings from a small group of athletes, and those repeated measurements can be valuable for evaluating a specific mechanical variable.
But hundreds of measurements are not hundreds of different hitters.
Real-world use brings in what a controlled study cannot: different ages, hand sizes, swing mechanics, bats, batting gloves, temperatures, pitch speeds, levels of competition, and thousands upon thousands of actual at-bats.
That is where the real-world data become powerful: thousands of hitters across different ages, levels, conditions, bats, and seasons provide a breadth of evidence that no small controlled cohort can produce.
Repeated measurements do not create hundreds of different hand sizes, swing mechanics, ages, experience levels, batting gloves, bats, weather conditions, or playing environments.
That does not diminish the value of controlled testing.
It explains why controlled testing and broad real-world data belong together. The laboratory can show, as this independent laboratory testing did, how ThumbPRO® measurably reduces the transmitted force reaching the hand. The ThumbPRO® baseball thumb guard reduced transmitted force by almost two-thirds compared with using no thumb guard.
Real-world data answer a different question: What happens when thousands of different hitters use that same product across different ages, skill levels, bats, swing mechanics, temperatures, practice environments, games, and seasons?
For ThumbPRO®, we now have both.
We have the measured laboratory result showing that ThumbPRO® reduced transmitted force by almost two-thirds compared with using no thumb guard. And we have more than five years of real-world use, more than 100,000 ThumbPRO® guards sold, and more than 1,000 verified customer reviews showing how that protection held up across practices, cages, games, tournaments, and full seasons.
That is where the laboratory result meets the real-world evidence.
What 1,021 Verified Reviews Show Beyond the Study
ThumbPRO® customers have left 1,021 published verified reviews from 886 separate customers, with an average rating of 4.90 out of 5 stars. The reviews are collected and published by an independent third-party review platform.
We read every one of them.
For this analysis, we looked at:
- 1,021 published verified reviews in total
- 849 of those 1,021 containing substantive written feedback rather than a rating alone
- 886 separate customers
- 4.90 out of 5 average rating
- 93.3% five-star reviews
- 98.4% four- or five-star reviews
- More than five years of customer feedback
- Reviews spanning 16 ThumbPRO® products
ThumbPRO® also has a return rate of less than 1%.
More importantly, our analysis of 1,021 verified reviews lets us ask the next question:
Does the measurable protection seen in the laboratory show up in real-world use?
The answer is yes.
Players and families repeatedly describe protection against bat sting, greater comfort, better confidence, and continued use in the conditions that matter most: practices, cages, games, and full seasons.
Customers were not prompted to talk about bat sting, fit, grip, or confidence. They wrote about what stood out to them after actually using ThumbPRO® in the real world — in practices, cages, games, tournaments, and full seasons.
Of the 1,021 published reviews, 849 contained substantive written feedback. Across those 849, the real-world results were clear:
| What customers independently mentioned | Share of the 849 written reviews |
|---|---|
| Youth player | 32.6% |
| Bat sting, pain, vibration, or getting jammed | 25.9% |
| Fit or comfort | 24.3% |
| Grip or hand placement on the bat | 7.1% |
| Performance-related outcome at the plate | 6.4% |
| Confidence, fear, flinching, or hesitation | 4.8% |
| Purchasing another ThumbPRO® | 4.8% |
These are not survey-response rates. Customers were not asked to select from these topics. They independently chose what to discuss in their written reviews. A single review could mention more than one topic, so the percentages are not intended to total 100%.
More than one in four of the 849 written reviews independently discussed bat sting, pain, vibration, or getting jammed — the very problem ThumbPRO® was created to address.
The Voice of the Customer
The words hitters, parents and coaches used most, in their own reviews.
Of 1,021 published verified ThumbPRO® reviews, 849 contained substantive written feedback. These are the words that appeared most often in those 849, April 2021 to September 2026. Unprompted — customers wrote whatever they wanted.
You can read the published reviews yourself on the ThumbPRO® Reviews page.
The data show the pattern. The voices of the athletes and parents behind those numbers show what it actually means at the plate.
“I Was Confident Enough to Continue”
A laboratory can measure what happens during a controlled test.
One ThumbPRO® athlete, Ulises, tells us what happened during an actual batting-cage session.
“The other day I was using the ThumbPRO while I was in the cages training and caught the end of the bat at least 8 times off the machine, and the ThumbPRO saves my life from getting stings, where I was confident enough to continue off the machine, not hurt my hands. This product really saves your life on the hands.”
— Ulises H., Fort Lauderdale, FL · verified ThumbPRO® customer
That is real-world use: repeated off-center contact, a pitching machine, and a hitter able to keep training.
A baseball thumb guard study can measure force. It cannot measure confidence.
But hitters know what it feels like to step back into the box without worrying about the next mishit.
“He Won’t Bat Without One”
One of the strongest signs of real-world performance is simple: players keep choosing to use it.
“Great product! My son (D1) won't bat without one. He has been using these ThumbPROs since high school.”
— Danielle, Tulsa, OK · verified ThumbPRO® customer
High school through Division I baseball means years of practices, games, different pitchers, different bats, and thousands of swings.
That is a very different test from an afternoon of controlled measurements.
Another customer made the point even more simply:
“Son loves it. It's the third one we've bought.”
— Johnny G., Hoover, AL · verified ThumbPRO® customer
When a hitter keeps choosing ThumbPRO® through practices, games, and full seasons, that is real-world performance.
What Confidence Looks Like for Young Hitters
Developing hitters experience the mishits — jammed hands, balls off the end, cold-weather sting — while they learn to find the barrel consistently.
ThumbPRO® prevents bat sting, and young hitters can stop worrying about the mishit and commit to the swing. Parents see that change at the plate.
“My 7U player would get timid at the plate as soon as he would get a little thumb sting from an inside pitch or not getting a good barrel on it. The ThumbPRO got rid of all of the worry immediately and shot his confidence through the roof. He can totally focus during an AB without the fear of bat sting weighing on him.”
— Cody, St. Louis, MO · verified ThumbPRO® customer
The same thing shows up in softball:
“The ThumbPRO has turned my 13 year old daughter into an aggressive hitter at the plate. No more bat vibrating has her confidence soaring.”
— Tasman, Milwaukee, WI · verified ThumbPRO® customer
That is something a laboratory cannot capture. The test can measure the reduction in force. Parents can see what that protection does to a hitter's confidence.
Cold Weather. Wood Bats. High Velocity.
Real baseball introduces conditions a controlled test intentionally removes.
Cold weather is one of them.
“Absolute game changer. I ordered this for my son, as we live in the PNW and it's too cold to use our game bats most of the time so we resort to wood. The ThumbPRO keeps us practicing through the cold and no more sting! Helps align the bat correctly with our younger players. We love these things!”
— Chris C., Vancouver, WA · verified ThumbPRO® customer
High-velocity machine work is another:
“Love it! Stops any sting, especially off of the hack attack at high velo. Puts my grip into a much better position in my hands as well! Highly recommend!”
— Shannon C. · verified ThumbPRO® customer
Cold weather. Wood bats. High velocity. Pitching machines.
Those are not isolated test variables.
They are the game.
When a Player Has Something to Compare It With
Some customers came to ThumbPRO® after already using another type of thumb guard.
Their experience is particularly interesting because they already had something familiar to compare it with.
“Works great. My son has been using a different type of thumb guard for years and he wanted to try this one. He immediately noticed a difference in how the bat felt when hitting. He said the sting he normally felt with the other type was totally gone. A plus product. Would definitely buy again.”
— Jennie G. · verified ThumbPRO® customer
These are individual customer experiences, not controlled head-to-head testing.
That distinction matters.
But so does the reason they are included here:
These are real people describing what happened when they put ThumbPRO® on their hand and hit with it.
Why ThumbPRO® Works So Well in the Real World
A Patented Contoured Design
ThumbPRO® is not simply a piece of padding.
Its patented ergonomic saddle is designed to fit naturally on the hand, around the area where the top hand interacts with the bat.
It stays comfortably positioned while the hitter swings.
One of the best compliments we hear from players is that, after getting used to ThumbPRO®, they forget they are even wearing it.
That means they can focus on hitting instead of adjusting the equipment on their hand.
Premium High-Performance Silicone
ThumbPRO® is made from premium medical-grade silicone selected for flexibility, durability, and performance across the range of conditions hitters encounter during a season.

Three Sizes
ThumbPRO® comes in Small, Medium, and Large because hitters do not all have the same hands.
Proper sizing helps create a comfortable, secure fit rather than asking every player to adapt to one universal size.
Completely Ambidextrous
ThumbPRO® works on either hand.
Right-handed hitters wear it on the right hand. Left-handed hitters wear it on the left — the top hand in each hitter's batting grip.
There is no heat molding, boiling, or complicated fitting process.
Put it on. Take your normal grip. Hit.

Made in the USA
ThumbPRO® is designed, engineered, and manufactured in the United States by a family-owned company.
From the Data to the Dugout
This is where the two kinds of evidence come together.
Independent laboratory testing found that ThumbPRO® substantially reduced transmitted force compared with using no thumb guard.
That is the mechanical result.
Then there are more than five years of customer voices.
Players talk about getting jammed.
They talk about bat sting.
They talk about comfort and fit.
Parents talk about confidence.
College players keep wearing ThumbPRO®.
Families buy second and third ones.
Youth players use it. Softball players use it. Travel players use it. High school and college athletes use it. Professional players use it.
And ThumbPRO® has been worn by pro players in three consecutive World Series.
None of those things replaces laboratory testing.
And laboratory testing cannot replace them.
The testing shows what ThumbPRO® does mechanically. The people show what that protection means in the real world.
Lab Tested. Game Proven.
The laboratory gives us the measurement.
The people tell us what that measurement means.
That is why we and players value both.
